Dominican Republic is one of five countries in the world that increased its exports of all categories of footwear to the United States. This positioned the country as the ninth largest exporter in this market. In 2014, the country sent 10.02 million pairs of footwear to the United States, which meant an increase of 10.5% over the previous year.
2014 was the year in which Dominican Republic took off strongly into the footwear exports. Today this industry generates more than 17,000 direct jobs in the free zones of the country. Most of them located in the province of Santiago with companies that manufacture several of the most prestigious and recognized brands of the world, such as Timberland, Wolverine, Sperry, Clarks and Allen Edmonds, among other widely accepted names in the world market.
The president of the Eurochamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic, Hans Witsenboer boosts the export boom in this sector, making known that the total exports to the Old World amounts to 800 million dollars, 4% corresponds to footwear.
