Banana is the most popular fruit in the world, and therefore the most consumed. It is estimated that there are about a thousand varieties of bananas (Musa) in the w orld, divided into 50 groups.
The most popular banana is known as the Cavendish variety, produced for export markets and greatly successful in the Dominican Republic, the leading nation in the export of organic banana.
Among the nations of the Caribbean, Dominican Republic stands out as the largest exporter in the region and the world’s leading exporter of organic bananas, since the country has managed to effectively control the Black Sigatoka thanks to the arrangement of its plantations in relatively dry areas, in the northern provinces of the country, and the adequate combination of suitable techniques for pest control. Dominican Republic has 100,608,000 m2, with 45% dedicated to organic banana production and 55% to the conventional production. Also it enjoys the trust of the international market, especially the high demanding European market.
