DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is located in the eastern part of Hispaniola Island, occupying two thirds of the territory, which it shares with the Republic of Haiti. It is the second largest island in the Caribbean region.
 
FOUNDING FATHERS. Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez and Matias Ramon Mella are the most important representatives of the fight for independence and national sovereignty who constituted the patriotic secret society “La Trinitaria” that promised to “implement a free, sovereign republic, independent from any foreign domination”.
 
SHIELD. Created at the time of the proclamation of independence. It has a Bible in the center and is surrounded by an olive branch and a palm branch. A blue ribbon on the shield says: “God, Country, Freedom” and a red underneath says: “Dominican Republic”.
 
FLAG. Conceived by Juan Pablo Duarte and made by Concepción Bona and María Trinidad Sánchez during the period of independence. It was raised for the first time on February 27, 1844 by Francisco del Rosario Sanchez.
NATIONAL ANTHEM. It was composed by Jose Reyes and written by Emilio Prud’Homme. First sung in 1897 and officially since 1934, it highlights the values that characterize an arduous, worthy and willing to fight nation to permanently improve the living conditions of its people.
 
CULTURE. Dominican cultural life presents a strong fusion product of the mixing of Spanish, African and American Indian. These roots can be seen in the cultural expressions and folklore, especially with great force in music, which is filled with cheerful and earthy rhythms such as merengue and bachata, which are heard around the world.
